When I decided to take part in 2017’s NaNoWriMo as my starting point for my first novel, I had no idea if I was going to be able to complete the 50,000 words in November challenge of if my novel would even be that long. You see, as this was my first novel, I had no conception of how long 50,000 words even was. I’ve been a screenwriter and filmmaker for over 20 years, so had only been concerned with pages and minutes up until then. Not to mention I started the challenge until November 10th, so I had quite the unknown mountain ahead of me.
Turns out that, not only I did have enough time, actually making it to 60,000 words before the end of the month, but I wasn’t even remotely close to finishing the novel. So, I immediately gave myself another challenge on December 1st; to finish my first draft by the end of 2017.
It would take another 90,000+ words to finish over the next 30 days and 22 hours to finish the first draft of “The Nawie”. When I typed my final words, it was just two hours before the New Year, and can say with supreme ease that it was the best New Years Eve celebration I had ever had.
Second draft shall commence in one week!
